Day 46

Had a wonderful restful night overlooking the buttes. Lovely feeling to be spending time here. John Wayne would have been proud of me! Went up to the visitor's centre for a wash and shave ... also changed into a new T-shirt.

Feeling good, except can't get onto good Wifi to uploads pics and a couple of videos ... will do that in the library at Kayenta (maybe?) Fuelled up with a good hearty breakfast and will make tracks shortly ... it's now 09:00 and the Sun is taking charge!

Crossing the state line into Arizona. As you can see, this is the high desert. Kayenta is a busy wee spot but it smacks of a shanty town too. The public library is a portacabin stuck on waste ground away at the back of a trailer park and it's manned by volunteers ... needless to say it was closed. The Navajos are still getting a raw deal ... you could spend a lot of money around here to improve things. Managed to upload 2 YouTube videos but haven't been able to upload other pics. They'll come later. Leaving Kayenta for a long 72 mile open run to Tuba City. I've enough water and food to do, but this is the longest stretch between towns that I've encountered so far ... and there will be a few more. The terrain is becoming a desert with tumbleweed, cactii and scrub. The ever present red sandstone rock towers on either side as I gradually climb onto a broad open plain. I see small ranches dotted about and a few horses but that's it. Reached my quota for the day now, 62 miles and it's getting very windy ... right in my face. This would be a good time to settle down for the night. There is a break in the fence with a few trees off to one side. Have to be careful pushing the bike so that I don't pick up any jaggy stuff on the tyres. Looks like a touch of rain might be in order ... I see flashes of thunder from distant storms. I'm surprised at night with the number of lights that I can see in this valley. I thought I was isolated but obviously lots of dwellings about. Have a final look at the night sky before heading off to 'Blanket Bay' .... only another 35 miles to Tuba. Check in with Calum & Paul. Goodnight.

Good Morning Arizona! Your're lucky, the rain is in charge here as usual....hope it improves for the festival next week. Glad to see you changed that green T-shirt! Have been following your blog everyday, it has been giving us such a great insight into your surroundings and environment, the scenery is totally amazing! This seems to be the most challenging part of your journey but probably the most interesting also. Keep up the good work & good luck!

You are one brave guy, Joseph. We are enjoying reading your blog at the "coffee" club hour in Sutherland, Ne. Hope your days are going well. We finally have had a break in the 100 degree weather. We're enjoying the mid to upper 80's this week. Hang tough. Debbie Soderholm
