I'm not sure how I came to plan a cycling trip across the USA or even why I want to do it other than to say that I enjoy the challenge of doing something different.
Several years ago I renewed my interest in long distance bicycle touring and though it can sometimes be painful and uncomfortable that's not the lasting impression that lives with me. I relish the adventure and the feeling of freedom and independence you get even after a few days on the road and if you start off at a good level of physical fitness then you really can enjoy the whole experience with surprisingly little effort.
Weather conditions and hilly terrain become less of an issue as you change your priorities to more mundane things. Personal hygiene is challenging as is the obsession with food and the need to regularly refuel your body. On the road you can burn up to 500kcal/hr so hunger and tiredness are constant companions. I like to do 'wild camping', not just to reduce expenses but to keep true to the theme of doing a classic unsupported solo trip. It removes the pressure to reach a destination on time and allows more flexibility in your plans. It's also more fun!
I'll depart Woodlawn, NY on Monday, 20th June and hope to reach Torrance, LA in early September. Enroute, I'll meet folk, see and experience the best that the US has to offer and open up my own horizons, hopefully returning to Ireland with a better outlook on life.
This blogsite will enable me to keep in contact with family and friends. Using the 'magic' of the Internet they too can track my progress and examine my location in some detail. You're welcome to join us. Enjoy!
