Day 1

This day has finally arrived. Geee! I'm nervous yet at the same time excited and looking forward to the journey. Thanks to all for your support and I hope we all find this adventure interesting and fun. Have adjusted my date/time settings to EST. Setting off from Yonkers at 06:30 to jostle with the NY rush hour traffic. Met Reggie McIlwaine from Cairns standing at the corner waiting for his lift to work. He helped me buy a 'doo rag' in the local store! Will switch the iPhone off shortly but will blog later on in the day. Traffic was surprisingly light and made a good 25 miles by 10 o'clock ... that's me on route 46 for the rest of the day. I'll take a short break now ... Weather is nice, not too warm. Drivers have been quite courteous, so far.

Downtown NY from the GW bridge The road surface is very good and I have a hard shoulder that gives me comfort though I've still got to be careful at junctions. Doing well ... 40 miles covered mow and it's getting warm ... Thing I'll have a nap under the shade of a some trees for a few hours and try to Skype home. Getting a bit too confident mow and managed to get myself 'lost' ... made a stupid schoolboy error and took a wrong turning ... I did About 10 miles before realising my mistake ... Oh the day was going so well too. Hadn't needed GPS but now I have to get back on course and it will take some time ... finished the day having done 63 miles ... and a little behind schedule but the countryside is nice and villages like Netcong are very pretty. I set up my tent in dense thicket about 20m off the side of the road where no one can see me. It's getting dark and the glow flies are all around me .. It's the first time I've seen them and it feels like I'm in the movie 'Avatar'! Too warm for a sleeping bag .... I'll finish off this cold pizza now and call it quits. This has been a good day.

Wow, Joe, this is amazing. We will be following religiously. Reg says to make sure you lock your bike at all times. You never know, even with those wholesome white-bread Americans! Best of luck and enjoy....
