Day 9

Slept well last night and got on the road by 06:45 ... slow to get started ... overcast and misty but that's fine. The road surface is good in places but then breaks up ... having to cycle on the traffic side of the white line and use my mirrors. Changed my socks today ... don't know whether to wash the old pair or throw them away! Managed a cat's lick of a wash last night in a small pond ... it helps! Now about 30 mile from Akron and that is more than halve way for today ... considering making tomorrow a rest day if I can find a nice spot to hang out. Temperature rising 80F and it's still only noon! Sitting in a cool McDonald's trying to catch up with World news. One or two nice lakes up ahead and would made good bases to rest and do a bit of primitive washing ... would like to checkout bike too. The USA no longer feels 'alien' and I can relate to all that I see around me ... some of the homes seem remotely located but I suppose when you have a car it's not a big issue. Can't believe my luck ... coming out of Akron on a road that runs parallel to route 224, I start to ascend a small hill past a few properties ... an auction has finished and this man is removing some items from the place and for some unknown reason I take the opportunity to stop for a breather ... the conversation got started and within a few minutes David Kaufmann has invited me to spend the night at his farm a few miles up the road. He draws a map on the back of his business card and I agree to meet him there! Wonderful! I have a shower, change of clothing, a nice meal of waffles and chicken gravy followed by fruit and meet his wife Carol and son Larry ... this is the way to tour America on a bike ...!! I was complaining about a little heat ... and thinking of taking a rest day ... no need for that now. I've done 60 miles today and something like 560 in total.

Location:Akron

Please throw the socks away! You can always buy cheap clothes at Wal-Mart along the way.

Hi, Joe. We are happy to read how you are and where you are. We just got back from Portugal anniversary trip and now see that you have moved on to Ohio. We hope you are enjoying yourself and being safe. The temperatures you are experiencing are like the temperatures we were experiencing in Portugal. Lovely for me, not for Seamus. Anything exciting coming up soon?

Love,

Dee and Seamus

Socks
Plan A
I think you should start selling them on ebay..... Smile
"Adventurers socks only worn for 8 days, still got the sweat and tears".
keep them in a plastic bag and watch the fungus grow. Yuck.
Plan B
Better do as Pamala says get rid of them quick.
PS. you got to keep yourself free of fungal and various other foot ailments that could stop you on your epic journey.
Smile
There are other things you can do with them but suggest Plan B

Socks, Hope it keeps you smiling.
Ps Just thought you could do woofing. or www.wwoof.com or is it woof.com That is the World Wide Organization of Organic Farmers. Check out the site on the web. Woofing is going to work on farms across the world they give you board food and lodgings for 6 hours a day work. That way you could stop off along the route take a break do some good work get paid in food and board and carry on later.
PS you might never come back.
My daughters use it to go on riding holiday to Canada.
They check out the farms with horses. (Canada 4 time already).
Take note my brother took 14 years to go round the world.
I was near two years getting from Aussie to the UK.
Once you start an adventure like this you never know where it will go to or end.
Your certainly getting free food board and lodgings.smile
It could become a way of life.
PS my brother is still stuck in California. smile.
Have a great Journey
Just teasing
Paul D
Enjoy the journey once started it never ends.

We will give you free board and lodgings in KL when you make it.
Smile
KL = Kuala Lumpur

Also, my sister in law in Bolinas who is much nearer says you can stop off in Bolinas Californa.
It got a nice pub called Smileys and a surf beach.
Its a burn-out town. You will like it, full of transient people going somewhere who have just stopped off.
Turn left when you get over the Golden Gate Bridge along the coast road through Stinton Beach Just ask the family name. smile.

Joe,
That was great to hear about someone offering you a place to stay. It restores your faith in humanity. 560 miles very impressive. 'Keep her lit' as they say here. Seamus and Dee.

Hi Joe,
Joe,Joanne,Ryan & Amy here. Been trying to follow you over the past few weeks with limited success: we are doing our own tour (caravan). In the south of France at the moment. I have great respect for what you are doing and I am sure it gives many readers/followers courage to deal with any issues in their own lives. We will continue to drop in whenever we can. PS ditch the socks sure you can find replacements. Oh and hope you have a Baloney stick with you to while away any idle time.
Take care Joe & Co.
