Day 23

On road by 07:00 ... didn't have a great sleep as it was too warm for me and I'm all sticky with sweat. The road to Clarinda was good with a few nice downhill stretches. It's threatening to rain now which might be alright except it really can come done like 'cats & dogs' here ... I'll wait for a while and see what develops. My immediate concern is that the Missouri River basin is still flooded and some people are saying that the roads across into Nebraska are closed .... meaning that I'll have a detour of 50 miles or so north towards Omaha City .... Hmmm? This wasn't in my plans ... that's a whole day's journey for me! All I can do for the moment is press onto Sidney and see what it's like for myself?

This is the birthplace of Glenn Millar in Clarinda. Now in the busy little town of Shenandoah and it looks as if my luck has run out ... it's the usual nice day and I have a strong tailwind but now I'm being forced to turn north to get to an area where I can cross the Missouri ... the State Highway 2 is closed to everything, I'm told ... though I'm still gonna call at a police station for confirmation and advice. Just had a foot long turkey, salad sandwich at SubWay and am ready for a wee sleep! Called in at the Sheriff's office in Shenandoah for a bit of advice on getting across the Missouri River. They were very helpful and suggested I get off the very busy main roads as all the heavy traffic is being diverted north too. Taking the scenic route up through Tabor and Council Bluffs to cross the river at Bellevue ... might have to use an interstate road which could be another problem? The detour can't be helped ... haven't seen any flooding yet but it's supposed to be very bad. The hills in this part of Iowa are always present and I've surprised myself with my ability to cope ... all that training up Glendun and Glenaan is paying for itself now! I hope the weather tomorrow is like today ... not too warm, overcast at times with a nice NE breeze. Pitched the tent in a big garden behind some conifer trees ... didn't ask permission .... Oops!! Completed a respectable 65miles. Total to date is just short of 1400miles.

Location:Clarinda, Iowa

No joke about the coyotes and raccoons Joe. As I said earlier, watch out for the wildlife. Don't leave food around you. Blog is brilliant!!!

Hi Susan Hi Joe,

Have you got water wings for crossing the Mississipi? smile.

Dont worry about the animals attacking you Your feet smell after a days riding will kill anything in a mile radius.

Joking apart it is good advice, we have monkeys that break in open the fridge and steal and eat all the food if you dont lock your windows. worst of all they leave fridge door open.
Smile, I hear grizzlies do the same and are famous for giving a big hug!!!

Crimson rozzella's small parrot birds use to steal all the shiny objects in camp in Aussie, and I am in no doubt that these critters will collect all your little valubles as well as your food to play with. so watch your phone watches and even your money.

But I am sure your boy-scout time in Drumchaple and Auchengillan will keep you in good stay.

I am please your meeting plenty of people to chat too them... As the lonelyness of being on your own looking wiered on a bike in the middle of no where can warp your brain.
Oooh thats already happened???
Smile.
Have a great time and watch the rain and floods.
Wishing you a safe journey.
