Day 31

Up at 06:00 and hope to be on the road shortly. Everyone else is asleep and I said my "Goodbyes" last night. Having a glass of milk and will let myself out! Can you believe this? Feel really refreshed .... but it is going to be another very hot day ... same routine ... get 30miles done before midday ... then get some shelter. Off we go!

A few miles down the road bumped into Derek Meyers and his new wife Laura. They are just married and are touring the States on their honeymoon. The idea is rather than have guests travel from various parts of the country to one big reception, they would visit the guests at various locations and have several mini-receptions. The setup on the tandem was such that they could pedal independently ... good luck, congratulations and best wishes. Had a bit of a break indoors ... been in contact with Mark Rowan and hope to be with him on Friday evening. Really looking forward to a few days rest. Just 12 miles into Spelding ... sure your granny could do that ... even in this heat! I constantly amaze myself ... the temperature is high, but I put some food (fuel) into me ... loaded up with fluids, soak and drape my J-cloth over my shoulders and I got down here to the Spelding library in no time at all ... doing 15knots at times! The AC is nnnnice! Aah! I'll hang around for a few hours .... maybe take a nap. The receptionist in the library said that the highest temperature today was 97F. I was 'dive bombed' by birds that must have nests close to the grass verge ... I can see them coming up from behind by their shadows on the road ahead ... they must feel good when they chase me out of their territory.

Wow! Look at this piece of wood sculpture in the library. 'Tis called 'Windlace' .... carved out of a tree trunk.

And look at this one that I missed inside the front foyer. Now clocked up 68 miles and in the small settlement of Merino. I'll get a good pub meal here and that will be me prepared for tomorrow. Sensible thing now is to leave in plenty of time to choose a place for the tent ... there's plenty of wide open space but I would rather keep out of the long grass. Can you believe this? I went to the check-out to pay the bill for my meal and 2 glasses of milk only to be told it had been taken care of! "What do you mean?" says I. "Well when you brought your bike into our yard a local man was so impressed by what you were doing he paid your bill" was the reply "...but I haven't been given a chance to say thank you to him" ... that was a very generous gesture and is now typical of what I'm experiencing here in this wonderful country. Thanks. Still can't get over a complete stranger whom I didn't even notice pay for the meal ... so I decide to sleep in the local park ... the town can't be a bad place .... and just as well. No sooner had I the tent up than this ferocious wind hit the town ... I immediately thought of tornado!! ... but it was just a prelude to a very severe downpour ... where did that come from? Lovely rain ... Oh! The air cooled down and I was serenaded off to sleep with the pitter patter of raindrops. That will keep the mosies at bay too. Another wonderful day with 71miles under my belt.

Hi Joey, I have been reading your blog since DD sent me the link. what an amazing experience you are having, you put us young guys to shame. I actually went out into the garage today and inflated the tires on my bike, who knows I may actually even go as far as to ride it one of these days. From reading your posts I see you are getting to know how friendly and kind the American people really are. Safe trip and stay cool.
