Day 58

Well rested and feeling good. Will depart motel around 08:00 and am expecting a difficult navigation day. Yep! Absolutely guaranteed to get lost ... half the roads will be denied to me ... I wouldn't want to be on them anyway! Tactics for today is to drift across LA in the general direction of LAX ... the aircraft are numerous and easy to spot. Once I get within a few miles of Brea, I'll call Kelvin and hope he can escort me in! Need to be careful with traffic as well as not ending up in bad neighbourhoods ... or maybe I should keep on Route 66 through Holywood to Santa Monica Pier ... now that would be something; cycling up Holywood Boulevard, 7 days ahead of schedule. Odometer reading 3207.7 miles with approximately 80 miles to go. This is going to be exciting. It's just a slog up a slight incline, with a wind in my face, to the summit of the Cajun Gap ...

steep downhill for the next 10 miles or so ... might be too fast!! Hope the hard shoulder on the Interstate is clean? The heat is still a big issue for me. I'm progressing along Foothills Boulevard (Route 66) but the heat from the road and the low Sun make this hard work. I think LA has it's own distinct smell and I can detect it now. Traffic is fast and furious but I'm in no rush ... and I give them all the space that they want. Earlier in the day took shelter in a small town grocer's shop in Devore ... the shopkeepers were interesting and 'phoned around for their friends to come and have a chat. Should be at Alexander's house in a few hours now.

The final run through the urban areas of LA was very interesting ... at least the scenery was changing all the time but the traffic lights slowed me down a lot. Paul, Kelvin and Athena came out to escort me in the last few miles. Had a shower and a great meal and looking forward to a good sleep. Tomorrow should be a straightforward run of about 40 miles across town to the Pacific Ocean ... I just can't believe what I've achieved! Covered 74 miles from Victorville to Brea, LA. Goodnight.

Location:Los Angeles
