Day 47

Good night's sleep ... well rested and on the road by 07:30. Good road too ... nice surface, undulated but the shoulder is a bit narrow for my liking. Stopped at these weird formations ...

called 'Elephant & Donkey Feet' and chatted to a Navajo lady selling artwork. Coaxed her into speaking some native Navajo language ... couldn't make out a single word ... it was just a 'shpeel' of noise. Lovely noise! Further up the road I came across a very bad accident that had just happened 10 minutes earlier ... a motorcycle with 2 persons collided violently with a pickup turning on the road. One person is dead, another badly injured ... police are on the scene waiting for an ambulance and other services. I feel shaken just looking at the mangled mess of what's left of the motorbike. Lots of people are gathering up ... it's a caution to us all. Long flat and then downhill run into Tuba City ... it's Friday and the Library is closed! Trying hard to get good Wifi ... not always easy. Just met one of the policemen in town who was at the scene of the accident ... there were 2 fatalities, man and woman, on bike. The injured person taken away on the ambulance was the driver of the pickup. Still scary? Love people watching ... local men wearing white Stetson hats, sunglasses, very colourful shirts, denims and cowboy boots ... no kidding. Stepping in and out of hugh all terrain pickups ... real posers? Tuba City was a trading post founded in late 1800s. It's cooled down enough for me to move on to Cameron. Nice downhill run through very arid terrain ... stopped off for a few minutes to see dinosaur tracks ... oh! it's so desolate here. A wind has picked up right in my face and it's just spoiling the run for me ... that together with heavy traffic and a poor shoulder means I have to take care. The final run into Cameron is hard ... a bit of an incline makes me work harder than I would like and I'm feeling tired ... no wonder, 70 miles on the clock, but I'm nearly there.

It's bleak desert ... hot and windy

Call in at the service station and get some provisions. Get a 2 litre carton on milk and some yoghurts ... lovely ... Ah! the milk is ice cold and it doesn't take me long to finish it.

This is a major turning point for me. Take a left for LA. It's getting late ... have to push the bike off road over scrub ... can't get a suitable spot ... either solid rock or the soil is too soft to hold tent pegs. This will have to do ... 75 miles completed and I'm done! Sky will be nice tonight ... no rush in the morning ... only 30 miles up the road to Grand Canyon. No Internet access ... sorry, blog on hold. Goodnight.

Location:Tuba City, AZ
